Hello and welcome to the NYC Container website for 2009. Please be sure to read every section for all the information you'll need.

Container space will go on sale Tuesday, July 7 at noon EDT We will look forward to seeing you on the playa!

How to purchase:

You will be purchasing per cu/ft. There's a calculator on this site to help you know how many cubic feet your item measures.

Cubic feet are height x width x length.

You purchase when you reserve. Without payment, there is no reservation. The only way to purchase is via paypal on this website. There will be no cash purchases day of load-in.

There will be no refunding of cubic feet. Use what you buy. Be sure not to horde or overbuy. Please measure well. If you overbuy you're taking valuable cubic feet away from other burners. That's bad.

Cost:

We will be having either one or two containers based on need.

First, as last year, we will be selling one container outright.

Cubic feet will sell as follows:

$5 per cu/ft for UP TO 2000 cu/ft between July 7 (noon) – July 26, whichever comes first.

$6 per cu/ft between July 26 – August 3 until we sell out.

This year we do not expect a third container will be needed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: we will let you know when the first container is full. At this point, we will only be able to fill the second container if we get at least another 2200 cu/ft. We will keep you up to date about the viability at all times. We will announce on the burningman announce list, the burningman chat list and twitter if we sell out OR if there is not enough interest to get one or two containers filled.

We will not sell cu/ft day of load-in. There will be no cash purchases.

IF ALL CU/FT sell out during the early days, that’s fabulous. We want to bring you the best cost, but want our money early.

AGAIN…DO NOT HORDE cu/ft. We will not refund, you WILL be responsible for loading the ENTIRETY of your purchase at once, and be legally responsible for its contents.

And if you buy extra cu/ft frivolously you are denying your fellow burners from getting space on the Container. Measure well.

Packing your Things:

Important to note: please pack your bins fully. Hundreds of pounds of items will be packed on top of your bins. People will walk on top of your things. Items will be jostled when the container is lifted from train to train. It’s not a moving truck so things will not be secure.

We are not responsible for any damage to your things.

All items must be boxed. All bicycles must be taken apart and put in boxes. NO metal may stick out of any item whatsoever. Nothing jutting out. Things will be packed on top of each other. IF YOU HAVE A VERY LARGE OR STRANGELY SHAPED package, let us know asap

PVC piping must be taped together.

Your name must be on everything. Duplicate items come out every year.

Nothing illegal, flammable at high heat or questionable allowed. This means NO GENERATORS unless they are brand new, never been filled with gasoline allowed. NO gasoline, gas of any kind, explosives, pressurized canisters or illegal substances. These containers will get VERY hot during their cross country trek. Consequently, anything that can be damaged by extreme heat should not be shipped on The Container. Batteries, non-canned or dry food, compressed gas, explosives ... etc. Use your best judgment.

We reserve the right to open any container to check. If you blow up and/or cause the container to be searched because of suspicion of illegal substances, your friends will ALL HATE YOU because their stuff won’t make it to the playa…

Load In/Load out dates:

TENTATIVE date: Saturday August 8th

The container load-in will be located at the corner of Warren St & Morgan St Jersey City, NJ 07302. See a map here.

Please be mindful that you will be given an assigned time slot to load your things, which you will receive via email once you have made a purchase. It is important you keep to this timeslot. I know it's early on a Saturday morning, but remember this is a luxury to have. So if you come later than the time assigned, you will be making it difficult for all the other burners to get their things on playa and keep us late that day.

We will be CLOSING AND LOCKING the container at 6PM ON SATURDAY. If you miss load-in, you forfeit your space without refund.

If for any reason you can not be there that day and will be having someone else bring your things YOU MUST let us know at least one week in advance, and send your items with a NOTARIZED legal waiver which we will send to you one week prior to load-in.

Container on the Playa:

There is no guaranteed arrival date on the playa. Once it leaves NYC, we have no control. It has been the case in past years that the container has shown up a few days late. THEREFORE, take anything you need to survive with you and do not pack it on the container.

We've made it clear to the shippers the nature of the shipment and that it can be an issue of someone's survival if the container is late. We've gotten, in turn, all kinds of assurances, but we still wish that Murphy guy hadn't made up that Law...

We will keep you up to date on the playa arrival via the New York Burning man List and Tribe.net via NYC Burning man Tribe as best we can.

We will post our playa address as soon as we know it. We will also leave a message on the Info Message Boards in Center camp.

The container will only be open at certain hours. THIS IS NON NEGOTIABLE. It will be closed by 10pm every night. And will open in the morning. It will remain open all day. If you have a problem with this…we will respectfully understand if you want to ship your items another way.

This ALSO means that you will need to RELOAD your things during these times as well. WE WILL NOT PACK YOUR THINGS FOR YOU from the playa. If the container is closed and you leave your things on the side of the container and take off…THEY WILL NOT BE PUT ON THE CONTAINER FOR YOU. (we love you, but we’re not getting paid to do this and really…it’s your responsibility)

Who Are We:

We are just a group of burner volunteers. Unlike years past, we are not an arts organization giving grants or making your life better in any way. We give you nothing but shipping.

All finances will be transparent and posted when we get back.

There are no expected profits from The Container. If there are, profits will be given back to the community and we will let you know how.

We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. Just letting you know. This means if you’ve been a problem in past years, we know this. And we may say no.
